new clubs for a new golf trip

Mr. and Mrs. Beers are planning a trip along the east coast and wanted to make sure young Mrs. Beers had the right clubs in the bag. During the fitting we found out she's got game!! A quick swing speed and vertical swing plane put the Callaway ladies Xhot clubs in place that would not allow for good golf. So we McGolfed them.

With help from our new friend we determined that the Pure Grip wrap in standard size was the proper fit, tack and texture. The ACCRA iron shafts in a light weight and higher flex than found in the original set was needed.

I took them apart to find a tip weight installed. After some heating, drill and reaming I got the weight out and made the hosel correct to receive the new engines of the clubs (that would be the ACCRA shafts). After the glue cured, the ferrulles finished, the loft and lies adjusted and grips put on, Robin suggested making them truly custom by making the logo match in color. Off the work shop she sent me for paint mixing and I filled the new Tricept wedges with Hot Pink. Pretty cool really.

See below how we morphed the Callaway X2Hots into X2MCHots.

Pirreti Puttters in Stock at McGolf

The Pirreti Putter was the weapon of choice for Henrik Stenson when he won the Dubai Classic and the PGA championship. Made in Texas, this is truly a great putter when custom fit, by McGolf, to your putting stroke, Loft, Lie, grip size ETC.

The Pirreti putter is heavier than the normal putter sporting a gun metal or brushed silver finish. Pirreti  offers several models with various off sets for aiming and then you get to choose color of grip and headcover making it that much more personal. a classic putter, a fantastic piece and great feel.

NEW Demos Arriving

The New Callaway Big Bertha hybrid is in the house! Using a very successful Recoil shaft from UST Mamayia this combo is stunning, Using the shaft along with the cup face technology and adjustability this hybrid will be a real winner, come on down and check it out

Custom Made at its Best!

Tom came in looking for a new set of golf equipment and got his wish. Toms's wife Jane was in for a fitting a while back and now it was Tom's turn. Tom has a great turn into the ball and a great finish. He pinches the ball making for an easy pick in the Irons. When we got to the woods we found several choices to help his game. This guy is a machine when it comes to putting. When finished with the putter fitting he is a perfect scramble partner. Just put the putter away guys and gals.

The set make up consists of a Piretti Termo putter with a superstroke 3.0 grip. The irons are the Callaway APEX with UST Recoils shafts and the MacDaddy wedge.  The Wishon driver outperformed the group and the ORKA hybrids will supply the needed distance with accuracy. Thw whole set is sporting the Winn Excel oversized grip.

Thank You Tom

Left Handed irons make an impression on ME

ORKA golf is smaller company from the UK trying to make a foot print in the USA. This year the group has added some Japanese quadrupled FORGED irons and wedge. Primarily for me a set of Left Handed irons and a sand wedge. The design is super clean and made for the mid handicapper so any type of golfer can use this model with ease. A radius sole, minimal offset and mid cavity size and depth, Although not a design quality. These came without paint for personalization.  I tried these with my current gamers and must say these will have place in the bag.  WELL DONE ORKA.

Another low handicapper from West Virginia/ Ironton area.

Mr. Loggins found us through another very golfer. Mr Gagai.

We reshafted his Mizuno irons with Excaliber tour iron shafts and made an Orka Golf Driver with a UST tourspx shaft and golf pride grip.

I asked for a call when he had some time to play the new equipment. He agreed and said it might be a while due to the cold weather. Well,,,, a weekend had some payable weather and Robin got a phone call from nun-other than the man in the picture above and went on to say that he has now shot a 4 under and 5 under rounds of golf.

I'd say the fitting process is working.

Thanks Mr. Loggins

2015 PGA show day three the final day.

Shaking hands with golfers and vendors from England, Germany, Spain, Singapore, Japan, Korea and the USA created two things, one, a sore hand and two, a cold. I call it the Air conditioning cold. You need it in the day and wake up in the middle of the night freezing.

Needless to say our walk through the main floor was cut short. However, from the visiting and viewing of the show I will give you a few thoughts.

1)      People are saying that the golf industry is on a decline yet there were approximately 150 new golf vendors at the show. I wonder what the new companies see in the golf world that some do not.

2)      Most golf equipment companies are now figuring out that releasing a new driver or set of irons every 6 months in not in the best interests of the golf pro or the golf enthusiast. It would be my opinion and mine alone that the slowdown of releases will actually make the quality of the equipment go up. The companies can take the time to really invest into a truly unique and inventive change of the equipment. It would seem the OEM companies are taking a page from the component company’s playbook. Coming up with a design, doing testing to prove the product and then tweaking it based on the feedback from the clubfitters and Clubmakers.

3)      Last year the golf board was released. It is a hybrid of a very wide skateboard and the battery powered single person cart. This year, there were no less than four companies sporting a similar concept. One looked like a cross between a single person carrier you see at Walmart and an Army Humvee. Although the pace of play could be increased and there certainly are more fun and you are more alive when driving the board. I think we might lose the comradery of golf. Let’s face it, you go golfing with buddies, friends and significant others. This does not promote the bonding that riding in the cart does. If you are a zen golfer (golfing by yourself) then this is a must have.

4)      Certainly not last on the list but thanks to PAT and Charlie Evans and my dad Larry for visiting us at the show. These are the people I want to be like when I grow up. I know they can truly appreciate the extent we go through to get you to the info on the product we carry.

Favorites at the show:

1)      OEMs, Callaway, I know we carry them and this is self-promoting but this year they certainly shored up the lines. The APEX forged iron is a winner that is not changing this year. They added the Big Bertha iron which is a great iron for the golfer looking for forgiveness and distance in the same package.  The Xr line (replacing the X2hot) is improved and should be better than the original. The bertha line of fairway woods and hybrids should be looked over particularly if you are better player. The Chrome Soft will be a ball to check out. Finally for you short game guru’s the PM wedge is a special wedge for the player not afraid to throw the ball to the hole.

2)      2nd in OEM is Wilson. Write it down remember where you heard it. Wilson will be a brand to deal with in the coming years. They are showing improvement immediately after Wilson acquired a new designer. The M4 line is a result of that. This year the, the D200 line is vastly better. The irons are clean and stylish, the driver, with the UST Chrome shaft as a stock model is truly a great performer.  The irons are for the golfer needing some help but the driver could be found in a bag for any golfer.

3)      Components clubs, ORKA, again we are carrying them and they have been silent for a year but this year looks to be a break out. ORKA has released not one but three new Japanese quadruple forged irons. To my surprise one model is a lefty! A milled anser styled putter has entered the lineup. Combine this with a strong game improver with the CTI iron, a strong players iron in the RS1 and RS3 and ST tour. One thing to mention about ORKA. This company is very much faith based and gives a portion of the company profits to local charities.  We had some great meetings with Stu and Alex. We hope to get the word out about this company and spread good golf and the good word to the US.

4)      Components 2nd, Big fish golf had introduced a new line of forged irons and wedges to the golf industry. I talked with Eric Ng the owner and looked over the line. Very clean, Very stylish and should perform well.

5)      Shafts: Accra has modified its line up to include a new shaft the FX line. A variable weight and variable tip shaft. This line and the “I” line of shafts are Dymatched. Meaning the performance (the profile) of the shaft is matched through the fairway wood and hybrid shafts. You receive the best performance and feel through the entire set. Expect more from us and ACCRA.

6)      Shafts 2nd: The KBS line is improved to include a new wedge shaft. You now have an option to flight it high with increased spin to launch it a bit lower with less spin.

7)      Accessories: In my opinion accessories need to be functional and fun. That immediately removes a lot of the products. However, I am still impressed with the Snaphookz bag accessory, it provides organization with style and it works.

8)      Accessories 2nd: Club covers, Club glove has made an old model better with the premier head cover line and for a fun factor and to show off my trekkie, is the uss enterprise putter cover.

9)      Shirts: I have two to pick. The first is Page and Tuttle. The company provides ton of styles and fits. For guys my size it’s a no brainer. Another is 2nd guy golf/ 2nd girl golf. This company is a product of Russ Ortiz from the San Francisco Giants. His company gives their profits to charities like the wounded warrior; feed the kids and a housing charity in South America.

Overall, another great time, except for the cold. We meet some new people and some new companies that will improve the quality of golf by lowering scores or making the time spent with your friends better.

2015 PGA show day two

The PGA show has been a brutal walking trip but it has been worth the great things Robin and have seen.and the people we have met.

We went to the new product area this day and I must say there was a upturn in the  number of  products for the Golf industry.  see some the of the photos below

2015 PGA show day one

Day was was a revisit of people and companies that we usually deal with. Fortunately, the products this year are very very positive.

Starting with some accessories include the NEXBELT. The Nexbelt. is a belt WITHOUT holes. the styles are current and innovative.  Multiple colors, buckle styles and belt styles.

Callaway is hitting a home run with the XR line of woods and irons. The chrome soft is a new golf ball that is making waves through that segment.

Bridgestone is slightly modifying the E series ball. with a new dimple pattern and a new push for the equipment.  the wedges and irons are pretty good.

Robin and I visited the UST, golf pride and many more suppliers. We will see the pictures tomorrow.

See the new products below.

2015 demo day

The demo day is the time and place for PGA professionals and alike to test all the new equipment from the big and small equipment companies.

Held at the Orange County National driving range a 400 yd diameter circle, there was plenty of room for the biggest of drivers. Including Bubba who was smashing some great drives with the new ping driver and the pink shaft.

see below for some of the thing we saw that you really wont see in the major media stories

Bounce it on the green

We talked about the flat stick in the first of a series of articles driven at golf equipment and how it can apply to your game. Today we are covering the Wedges and the different parameters that affect good wedge play.

After the putter, the wedge set contains the shortest clubs in the bag. Because they are short not much attention is given to the length of the wedge. However it is vital to have the proper length, lie and loft dead on for killer shots to the green.

Traditionally, the length of the wedge follows with the length of the irons. If your five iron is a half inch long then so should your wedges. If you have a medical issue where the shorter clubs give you problems then by all means get comfortable over the ball using a longer club.

Lie angle is absolutely critical in a wedge. As the loft increases so does the importance of lie angle. This is directional control for your wedges. It also impacts how you interact with the turf. Heel and toe digs can be catastrophic to your score. Conventional thinking would tell you to use lie angle in line with the rest of the irons. Most of the time that can be true. If you take a different approach to hitting the wedge such a bending over to much, then lie angle will need adjustment.

The definition of bounce of a club is about a paragraph of boring trivial engineering terms (sorry about that my engineering friends). In layman’s terms it is the measure of the angle of the leading edge of the wedge to ground from the middle of the sole. Bounce is all about getting into or out of the turf. Higher bounce is needed if your swing plane is more vertical or you typically play in fluffy conditions. The opposite is true for standard or traditional swing planes and your course is well manicured.

Another piece of bounce is sole grind. This the relief on the trailing edge of the wedge. There are far too many to discuss here. Between sole grind, actual bounce and sole width you can have a club that sticks in the turf creating stress on the body and your game or you can take just enough turf to get the ball near the hole.

The remaining items are shaft profile and grip size. Grip size does not need to change from the regular set. As long as it fits, is comfortable and creates confidence then you have the proper grips. There are wedge shafts dedicated to provide higher launch conditions and greater spin. The real question is does it matter? If you are a trapper of the ball it certainly can. If not then a standard shaft MAY be will be just fine.

Wedges are as personal as any club in the bag. Look, feel and fit are all needed for a great golf game. Take some time to make sure you are hitting wedges distinct distances and where to aim the club. If not give me a call and we can get you on the right track.
